Marco Polo, pp 20-21

Micah, year 3

Marco got sick. He climbed up in to the mountains where the air was healthier. The people in the valley got sick easily, so they lost no time in climbing the mountain and after a few days they were well again.

They were crossing mountains where it was super duper cold, and a bunch of blizzards and they would need to use two months to get across them. Fires couldn't burn very well and food couldn't cook because there was so much snow that the fires didn't burn very well because the snow just melted. (Mom: Actually in the pages, it was the lack of oxygen in the air why the fire didn't burn).

Tree in the Trail, ch 5

Eva, year 2

The plains had changed and the tree had changed. There were horses now, and people rode the horses. And the Spaniards came. The Indians played on the horses that they stole from the Spaniards, or the horses that ran away from the Spaniards. The boy gave his shield to the tree.

Marco Polo p 15

Micah, year 3
All the places that Marco went were new to him. He saw a mountain bubbling oil. The oil wasn't good for eating, it was good for burning, and now we use it for cars. They used it in their lamps.

There were shepherds who lived with their sheep.

(They were stuck in Uzbekistan, waiting for a Russian war to end, when the Mongols came through, and offered to take Marco's Dad and uncle to meet the Kublai Khan in "Cathay" (North Central China). They had no option of returning home soon, and were promised safe passage, so they went along.

"Marco was fifteen when his father and uncle finally returned to Venice. And he listened in amazement as Niccolo and Maffeo told of their adventures. Drawn by chance, by accidents of trade and war, they had traveled farther to the East than any westerners before them."

American Tall Tales, Ch. 1: Sky-Bright Axe: Paul Bunyan

Micah, year 3
Paul's parents were worried that he was so big he would bother people. So they put him out on the lake in a giant cradle. And he was even more trouble there. Other people with guns came and told them to move away.

When Paul was older, he was the best woodsman. He liked to put his axe on a long rope and swing it around shouting "Timber, Look out!", and a hundred trees would come wooshing down.

When the blue snow came, Paul got a blue ox. He named the blue ox "Babe". The blue ox was a big baby ox.
